Meaningful Holiday Traditions to Incorporate
Kwanzaa
Kwanzaa is an African-American celebration that takes place between Christmas and New Year's. It lasts for 7 days. There are 7 principles behind Kwanzaa, which are:
Unity;
Self-determination;
Collective work and responsibility;
Cooperative economics;
Purpose;
Creativity; and
Faith.
Decorations used for Kwanzaa are symbols of harvest, such as corn. A symbol of this holiday is the Kinara, which is a candleholder with 7 arms. The candles are symbolical of the cultural roots found in Africa and are represented with these colors:
3 green candles
3 red candles
1 black candle
Some of the traditions that can be incorporated for Kwanzaa include:
Gift giving;
Lighting of the 7 candles;
Making a mkeka (which is a woven placemat, made by overlapping strips of red, green, yellow and black);
Having a festive dinner, wearing festive clothing; and
Reading Kwanzaa stories.
