Hanukkah

Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday celebrated for 8 nights. It is also sometimes called the "Festival of Lights." In Hebrew, the word Hanukkah means "dedication." It is in remembrance of the dedication of the holy temple in Jerusalem after the Jewish people were victorious over the Syrians in 165 B.C.E.

The symbol for Hanukkah is the menorah, which is a candelabrum with 9 candleholders. This represents the 8 days that oil miraculously burned in the holy temple along with a special place for the shamash candle which is used to light all the other candles. Menorahs are often displayed in the windows of Jewish homes.

Some of the traditions that can be incorporated for Hanukkah include:

The lighting of the Menorah;

Making latkes (which are potato pancakes);

Playing the game dreidel (which is a four-sided top);

Reciting the Hanukkah blessings together;
