Look for products that contain zinc or avobenzone, which both protect against the sun's rays, and go with SPF 30 or more to get the maximum protection. Better yet, use sun-protective clothing products with the SPF built in. A t-shirt only offers an SPF of 6, but the futuristic clothing from companies like Coolibar, Solumbra and Solartex uses microfibers and other materials to block the sun's rays completely while keeping you cool and comfy. Many lines of sun-protective clothing go beyond the confining, cover-all fabrics they used to be and actually look like real clothes. Beautiful swimsuits, tank tops, cardigans and even dresses all work to keep the sun off your skin, and the best part is that they don't need reapplying!
