Never wear any clothes you don't want ruined. The appropriate attire for hair coloring should be anything old. It also helps to don a cover whether it's a smock, a towel or something else. Be sure to equip yourself with gloves so you don't stain your hands while doing your hair. Spread a thin line of Vaseline along the hairline. This will prevent dye from dripping down and staining your face. You may also want to pick up a bottle of stain remover in the event you do experience a mishap. Despite what you might believe, it's better NOT to wash your hair prior to applying coloring. The natural oils of the hair prevent the scalp from becoming irritated. Once you've completed the process, don't forget maintenance. Use a shampoo that is made specifically for colored hair. You also want to make sure your shampoo has UV filters, which will prevent your hair from fading out.
