To get some relief if your itchy, dry scalp is caused by dry skin, try products with naturally soothing oatmeal in them. Or you can make your own oatmeal concoction at home by boiling two cups of water, adding 1/2 cup of rolled oats and letting them soak, stirring occasionally. Strain through a coffee filter, and add 5 drops of lavender essential oil to the mix. Let the mixture cool to room temperature, and dab it over your scalp, leaving on for 15 minutes. Rinse with cool water and pat dry. A solution of witch hazel and water will help cool and soothe scalp skin as well. Avoid chlorinated water when you have a dry scalp, and if you can't, soak hair in tap water first so that your hair absorbs less chlorinated water. Rinse immediately after getting out of the pool and dry quickly but gently to allow natural oils to return more quickly to the scalp. Minimize heat styling, which has a drying effect. And, as difficult as it may be, refrain from scratching.
