These gadgets are pretty super for getting a dirty job done, and they're accessible to everyone. However, don't fall for tempting false claims. Here's the 411 on what sonic cleaners do - and don't do. Basically, a sonic device runs on rechargeable batteries and usually comes with a charger. After it reaches full power, a sonic cleaner vibrates at variable rates to dislodge dirt, plaque and other gunk from surfaces like your face and teeth. The philosophy is that the machine can spin, stroke or rotate thousands of times faster than your own hand. For example, high-end sonic toothbrushes may promise up to 20,000 strokes per minute to knock loose and remove food, plaque and stains. Some models include timers that keep you from overbrushing, and/or auto shutoff features that keep you from brushing too hard. At a considerably higher pricetag than a regular toothbrush and with costly brush heads, it's a bit of a commitment but one that can be worthwhile.
