When you know you're facing a meal that could cause you to overeat - like a holiday meal, barbecue or buffet - don't "save up" by skipping meals. Eat nutritious, sensible meals that lead up to the big event so that you're satiated and not tempted to choose high-calorie foods or extra portions. Eat more slowly at the meal. Take time to chew food thoroughly and make a conscious effort to put down your fork or spoon each time you take a mouthful. Load up on healthier foods, like lean protein and vegetables, before moving on to carbohydrates and higher-calorie foods on your plate.
