Super Summer Hairstyles

For many, summer means sun, fun and...frizz? How do you handle the heat with all of that hair? There are many easy-to-manage options for hot summer hairstyles, from short pixie cuts to easy, breezy updos. Don't forget to take extra care of your hair so it doesn't end up dried out and damaged from sun, heat, humidity, salt water and chlorine.

No matter what hairstyles are trending this summer, you can pull off a super look by getting the right cut, color and shape to match your own personal style. You might sport a carefree, tousled look one day, followed by a classy, sleek look the next, depending on what you are doing and how you want to present yourself.

The days of lying out in the sun to get natural highlights are passé. Taking good care of your body -- the inside and out -- is what's hot. The following tips can help you care for your tresses so that you can create some seriously cute summer hairstyles.

  • Start by saturating your hair with cool tap water before entering salt or chlorinated water. If your hair is completely wet before you dive in, then it can't absorb much more drying pool or ocean water. After your dip, use special products to get rid of any residual chlorine or salt water in your hair after swimming. The chemicals can leave a green hue in your summer locks.
  • Avoid using hot water to wash and rinse your hair. Cool water helps hair retain its color and shine.
  • Avoid sun overexposure. Throw on a hat or a scarf or sit in the shade when outdoors for long periods of time. Your skin isn't the only thing that the sun's rays might damage.
  • Use a leave-in conditioner. Redken's hair director, Jon Pulitano, told Vogue how to treat summer hair after spending time at the beach. "Always take a leave-in conditioner to the beach and use it frequently, especially after swimming," he advises. Make sure the product has UVA and UVB protection to avoid sun-damaged hair.
  • Moisturize from within. Stay hydrated to maintain healthy hair by drinking plenty of water in the summer, especially when outdoors for long periods of time.
  • Watch your diet. Following a diet high in omega-6 fatty acids can help hydrate your hair. Consuming too much sugar, on the other hand, can deplete necessary nutrients from your skin and hair.

Summer Hairstyles for Every Occasion

Summer is a busy time when trying to fit in outdoor activities like boat rides, day trips, and relaxing days at the lake, beach or pool. There is a super hairstyle for every summer occasion -- it just takes a little trial and error to see which ones work best for you.

Short and Sassy

Possibly the best super summer hairstyle is a short and sassy look. While a sleek, short style is easier to manage in the hot summer months, going from long locks to a short hairdo is something that deserves considerable thought. According to Kyle White, a senior colorist at New York's Oscar Blandi salon, told MarieClare.com, avoid making changes on a whim. "Sometimes it helps bring out what she's feeling inside – or how she wants to feel," he said, but a change in cut or color stays with you for a while, so be sure it is a decision you are happy with.

Pony Up

If a short haircut is too drastic, focus on getting longer locks up off the neck and keeping them off of your face, especially if you are active in sports, work in hot conditions or like to ride around with the top down on your sports car. Pulling your hair into a high ponytail, low ponytail or even a side-swept ponytail can be done in a loose, carefree way, or a sleek, business fashion.

That's a Wrap!

Nothing tames long hair in hot, humid and windy conditions like winding it up into a bun. A bun is a summer look that goes with shorts, a summer dress or swimwear. It can be dressed up or down and can be undone at any point in the day to release long, curly locks. A side benefit of wrapping up your hair is that it also protects much of it from the sun's harmful rays and prevents it from drying out.

Cute Curls

As long as you manage your curls with the right product and avoid overheating your hair with hot irons and blow dryers, putting cute curls throughout the back and sides of your hair can be a great summer hairstyle if you have a bob or longer hair. It's also a versatile look that you can wear from the office to the beach and out to dinner.

Ride the Wave

Summer is often a more laid-back time of the year, and there are times when your hair can match. Use less heat and fewer products and go for a more natural, tousled look that makes it look like you just came from the beach, even if you have been hard at work all day. Wrap wet hair in a bun and release layers of curls to fall freely once they have dried. Many hair care companies have caught on to the trend and created products that allow you to style your hair into carefree waves. Try Bumble & Bumble's Surf Spray, Not Your Mother's Beach Babe Texturizing Sea Salt Spray and Healthy Sexy Hair's Soy Renewal Beach Spray.

Accessories

Sporting hair accessories can complete a super style. Adding a bold yellow flower, a delicate metal clip or a silk bow that matches your outfit can help pull together the look you are trying to achieve. Smooth things over up front with one of the hottest trends of the season, a thick headband.

Regardless of the current trends, it's easy to find summer hairstyles that fit you by incorporating your personal style and figuring out which style best suits your needs for work and play.
