Breathe Easy: Exercise and Asthma

May is National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month, which also happens to be peak season for those individuals suffering from these ailments. An estimated 17 million people in the United States are afflicted with asthma. The purpose of the month is to raise awareness courtesy of the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. Spring allergies are in full bloom from the different allergens that are in the air. Unfortunately, that can bring out the worst in those who suffer from asthma and allergies. In addition to pollen, other triggers include cigarette smoke, cold/flu, animal dander, mold, dust and cockroaches. National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month is actually held in conjunction with World Asthma, the first Tuesday of May, as well as Food Allergy Awareness Week held the second week in May. Symptoms include shortness of breath, wheezing, continuous cough and chest pains or tightness. One of the biggest concerns for people who suffer from these issues is whether or not they can exercise. Exercise can be a trigger for some patients, which can cause wheezing. Ironically, the wheezing can begin after the activity is complete. Cold air can also cause asthmatics to have trouble breathing - so it goes without saying that exercising in the cold can deliver a one-two punch. Luckily, there are steps you can take so that you can still workout despite being afflicted with asthma. If you are plagued by exercise-induced wheezing, use a relief inhaler such as albuterol 10 to 15 minutes before exercising. It's always important to consult with your physician first before starting an exercise regimen. It's also extremely important for patients to have an asthma action plan in case troubles arise. This plan should include three zones - Green (asthma under control), Yellow (asthma control slipping) and Red (danger, take action immediately). It should have a description of the signs and symptoms tied to each zone. It should also have the treatments and actions for each zone.
