Beauty Sleep: Not a Myth

Here's an eye-opening fact on getting some shut-eye. A recent study published in the British Medical Journal found that people who don't get enough sleep actually look less attractive, less healthy and more tired that their well-rested counterparts. Researcher John Axelsson says that getting those Zzzzz's is one of the most effective beauty treatments that money CAN'T buy. That's good news for anyone looking for a simple beauty boost -- it's as simple as closing your eyes. Most adults should shoot for an estimated seven to nine hours of sleep every night, although it varies from person to person. Of course, this may be easier said than done for people who have trouble falling -- or staying -- asleep. Here are some tips for staying on track. Have a set bedtime every night. Try and hit the hay at the same hour -- whether it's a weekday or a weeknight. This will get your body into a pattern. Prior to turning in, don't eat or drink. Drinking too much liquid will have you making midnight runs to the restroom, while eating too late can lead to heartburn, reflux and other digestion issues. You should also avoid drinking too much alcohol or caffeine, which can be disruptive to sleep. Exercise regularly. Getting between 30 to 60 minutes of exercise a day will help you fall asleep and stay asleep through the night. You may want to exercise earlier in the day. Some people struggle to fall asleep when they exercise too close to bedtime. Another habit that might cramp your style is napping. If you are in the habit of power napping, you may want to limit your shuteye to the P.M. hours. Invest in a mattress, pillow and comforter that are all comfortable. You want to sleep easy. If you're struggling to fall asleep, get up and do something until you're feeling sleepy. You don't want to worry yourself about not being able to turn in. Following these steps will help you get the beauty sleep you need to put on a fresh face the next day.
