If you find your grocery bill creeping up and your waistline expanding, then it would be a smart idea to take a hard look at how and where you buy your food...and all those other seemingly inevitable extras. Seasons, smells and samples can empty your wallet and fill your belly, so let's take a look at some of the pitfalls you might find in your grocery store.
During the various holiday seasons, you might notice decorations and festive desserts side by side right as you enter the store. You can avoid sweeping the entire display into your cart by making a list beforehand of the decorations and food items you'll need to celebrate. Stick to the list, and buy decorations at discount stores, not the grocery store, where they tend to be more expensive. Avoid end caps - those end-of-aisle displays that tend to house sales items and seasonal combinations, like pumpkin pie ingredients at Thanksgiving.

* Go a few extra steps beyond the "pretty" end-cap displays to be sure that you aren't paying more than the prices on the regular shelves.
* Get some exercise bending down to check for lower prices on the lower shelves or stretching up to check for lower prices on the higher shelves.
* Also, beware of the "giant, economy-size" packages of your favorite products. Sometimes the smaller-size packages may have the lower price when you compare the packages on a per ounce or per pound or per item basis.
* If possible, try not to go grocery shopping when when you - and the kids - are tired and hungry. Keep some raisins or dried apricots or granola bars in the car, and munch a small amount on the way to the store. Keep water in the car to help fill up empty tummies a bit, too. That way, you will arrive at the store with a little more energy, you'll spend a little less money, and you will consume a few less samples. Also, you will all arrive home in much better moods than if you have argued, over-spent, and over-eaten while at the store and during the trip home.
Now, give everyone an extra hug tonight and have a nice weekend!
