After the baby is born, moms might expect that back pain to go away, but that isn't always the case, especially when you have your new bundle of joy to carry around all day - and a lot of the night, too. Bad posture while at the office or even breastfeeding can exacerbate back pain. But new moms can practice that neutral spine position and begin exercising to strengthen the muscles that support the back once the doctor says it's OK. Pilates in particular is a gentle way to build core muscles that help posture and alleviate back pain. The principle behind the practice is that of making your body like a tree: Strengthen the trunk to support the roots and limbs. Getting flat abs may be the goal of a new mom, but alleviating back pain simply requires a flexible muscle, according to the tenets of Pilates. Be cognizant of how you carry your new baby and how you're sitting during the day in order to put back pain behind you.
