If volunteering is up your alley, seek out opportunities in the classroom or front office. Make friends with other moms or school employees. Form a bond so that you won't be afraid to touch base with these folks on a regular basis. Get phone numbers and e-mail addresses so that you can reach out to fellow parents when you need to. Most teachers also provide an email address at which they can be contacted with questions or concerns. Put it to good use. In the age of technology, many schools even update their Web sites regularly and feature upcoming events and news for parents. If your child's school has a Web site, access it regularly to help you stay abreast of things. It's up to you to keep the lines of communication open at all times.
