Be Sun Savvy: Set to Protect

The heat is on - and it's only going to get worse. All the SPF in the world often isn't enough to protect your child from the beating sun in those hotter-than-heck months. But there is a ray of light. You can take other fool-proof measures to cover your kids up and keep them from being burnt to a crisp. Of course, sunscreen is always your first line of defense. It should be applied before your child ever leaves the house. Even on cloudy days, your child should be slathered in sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or more. Apply at least an ounce, or the amount that would fit in a shot glass. Sunscreen should be reapplied every couple of hours. If your child is going to be in the pool, ocean or other water, opt for waterproof sunscreen. Also pick up a tube of lip balm with SPF to protect the mouth. Look for clothing that is protective against UV rays. Solartex Sun Gear offers 50+SPF sun-protective swimwear, activewear and hats.

Invest in bathing suits with swim shirts for boys and girls alike. Or have your child wear a shirt over his or her bathing suit. Have your child wear as much clothes as possible without getting overheated. Hats are also a must. Generally opt for hats that have a bill or visor to cover the face. Sunglasses are also an essential accessory year-round to protect those little eyes. Get your child a pair of glasses that will block 99 to 100 percent of ultraviolet rays. Put them on a pair of Croakies to keep them from getting lost. If you're going to be outside for an extended period of time, put up an umbrella or tent to keep children out of direct sunlight.
