Hollywood is mourning the loss of famed actor Sherman Hemsley. According to multiple media sources, the actor, most famous for his role as George Jefferson, died at his Texas home. Hemsley was 74 at the time of his death. Police sources say he was found by his nurse. It appears he died of natural causes, although his agent only confirmed Hemsley's passing. Frank issued the following statement on behalf of his client: "Sherman Hemsley has been pronounced dead. El Paso Sheriff's Department has confirmed." Hemsley broke into Hollywood, appearing on All in the Family. However, he became a household name, thanks to the hit sitcom The Jeffersons, which ran from 1975 to 1985. His longtime co-star was Isabel Sanford, who died at the age of 86 in 2004. On the show, he played a crotchety and cranky owner of a successful dry cleaning business, while Sanford starred as his equally acerbic spouse. Once The Jeffersons wrapped up, Hemsley moved on to the lead role on the NBC sitcom Amen. He then did voiceovers as the triceratops on Dinosaurs. Despite the fact that The Jeffersons ended in 1985, Hemsley and Sanford teamed up many times throughout the remainder of their careers, appearing on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and in Old Navy and Gap commercials. Hemsley never married and had no children.
