Los Angeles fixture Rodney King, the impetus for the 1992 Los Angeles riots, is dead after drowning in his Rialto, Calif., pool. King rose to fame on March 3, 1991, when he was dragged from his delivery truck and beaten by Los Angeles police officers. Four officers were tried for police brutality and acquitted in 1992, sparking riots across the city. King's life didn't get much better because he was convicted multiple times of DUI, was shot and began his reality career with a stint on Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew, followed up with Sober House. King, 47, was found dead at the bottom of his pool Monday morning at 5:25. His fiance, Cynthia Kelley, told police that she knew King had been drinking and smoking marijuana and that he banged on the door at 5 a.m., after which she said she heard him fall into the pool. At this point, the death is being investigated as an accidental death with no foul play suspected, according to TMZ. Late Tuesday afternoon, police removed marijuana plants and a pitchfork from King's home. The coroner completed the autopsy, but a cause of death will not be announced for four to six weeks, pending toxicology and tissue studies.
