Assuming definitely makes an ass out of you and me. For years, many people have assumed that Queen Latifah is gay. However, when she recently performed at the Long Beach lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender festival in California, everybody thought she was finally owning her sexuality. The Advocate reports that she called the audience "her people" and begged the question "Are you feeling all the unity?" But Latifah says that just because she shows her support for the gay community doesn't mean she is a part of it. She tells Entertainment Weekly the nature of her sexuality still isn't for public consumption, nor will it ever be. She says: "I've never dealt with the question of my personal life in public. It's just not gonna happen." Back in 2008, the singer-actress side-stepped around the elephant in the room, telling the New York Times, "I don't have a problem discussing the topic of somebody being gay, but I do have a problem discussing my personal life... I don't care if people think I'm gay or not. Assume whatever you want. You do it anyway." Although she won't address the rumors about her sexuality, she admits to being a big supporter of the gay community. She tells Entertainment Weekly she takes pride in performing at the festival, "To me, doing a gay pride show is one of the most fun things. My first show that paid more than $10,000 was in a gay club on New Year's Eve in San Francisco. When people are going through hatred and bullying, the biggest thing to fight that is love... So that's all I encouraged my audience to do that night: to share their light and share their love. Period." Just don't expect to see her sharing her love anytime soon.
