By now, everyone has heard Mel Gibson's racial slurs about Jewish and Black people. But what may surprise you is that his biggest defender is Whoopi Goldberg. Whoopi defended her longtime friend on The View Tuesday, much to the surprise of her cohosts Joy Behar and Elisabeth Hasselbeck. Whoopi says Mel is a drunk and "drunks say crazy things." But Mel's latest vitriol directed at his ex-girlfriend and baby mama Oksana Grigorieva, followed by a right hook to the jaw (allegedly), was conducted stone-cold sober -- a fact that Whoopi doesn't address. "'I don't condone this. I don't think this is right. I don't think this is smart. But here's the piece of information I have that I don't think this is right: My experience tells me this is not a racist. Being a black woman, you'd think you'd give me a little bit of leeway to have some feel if I was around a racist," were her statements on Tuesday's show. She went on to call the mild-mannered Mel a "bonehead." On Wednesday, she blasted the backlash of bloggers and even people who called her office to rant at her assistant about her defense of the domestic abuser. "People lost their minds and said, 'Oh, you are defending him!'" Whoopi said on The View Wednesday. "I do believe had you actually watched the show -- all of you nice bloggers out there and all the folks that sit around at home and try to figure out stuff to do -- if you had actually watched the show, you would have heard us say, and you would have heard me specifically say, 'I don't condone this." And she had a special message to people who called and were nasty to her assistant: "You can kiss my behind!" she shouted. "You cowardly piece of dog mess!" We're pretty sure Oksana would say the same thing to Mel if she knew it wouldn't earn her a knuckle sandwich.
