And they call him cold and heartless...American Idol judge Simon Cowell proved his critics wrong this week when he made a lofty cash donation to save the life of an 18-month-old toddler from the United Kingdom. Little Sophie Atay was diagnosed with stage four neuroblastoma, a rare form of cancer that afflicts just 100 people a year in Britain. In order to receive life-saving treatments in the United States, the girl's family needed to raise a whopping $800,000. At the end of the day, they came up $160,000 short, which is when Daddy Big Bucks stepped in. The multi, multi millionaire happily handed over almost $200K for the treatment -- it will increase her chance of survival from 20 percent to 90 percent. The winner of last year's X Factor, Alexandra Burke, called Sophie's mom Karine and told her that Cowell wanted to lend a helping hand. Says Burke, "Karine did not know what I was going to tell her. So when I broke the news we were both crying -- but I was crying more than Karine -- she told me that she had been listening to my song Hallelujah on the way to the hospital. I had told Simon about the situation and that there was no time to waste because Sophie needed treatment immediately -- and he decided to give the money in a second. Now, we are hopeful that Sophie will be on the flight to the U.S. today." It's good to see that Cowell spends his money on something besides his vast wardrobe. What's your American Idol IQ?
