"Dead" Stars Live Again
Well, it took more than a week...plus a billionaire to top off the kitty, but the celebrities who pledged to participate in their own "digital deaths" until $1 million was raised have been resurrected. In honor of World AIDS Day on Dec. 1, several high-profile celebs took part in a fundraiser for BuyLife.org, which raises money for children afflicted with AIDS in Africa. Alicia Keys mobilized stars such as Kim and Khloe Kardashian, Ryan Seacrest, Swizz Beatz, and Lady Gaga, all of whom swore off Twitter and other digital communication until $1 million was raised by fans who presumably wanted their stars back online. But Popeater is reporting that the money simply wasn't being raised fast enough for the participating celebs. Some celebrities' itchy fingers got the best of them even before the goal was met. Usher began Tweeting again Sunday, for example. Insiders say the stars got frustrated when it took much longer than expected. Kim Kardashian's dead time was money - she can net 10 grand per sponsored tweet. By Monday, less than a third of the money had been raised. When donations crawled up to less than half a million Tuesday, the New York Post reports that Stewart Rahr, a New York billionaire, chipped in the remaining amount reportedly at the urging of some of the stars. "I heard through the grapevine that they were short on their goals, and I wanted to help. I sold my company, and I wanted to give back to others in the Empire State," Rahr said. The delay seemed to indicate that cash-strapped fans didn't really care whether or not the stars Tweeted or maybe didn't understand why the stars didn't pony up their own cash. "Some stars thought the money would be raised in 24 hours, and were embarrassed that critics said it proves nobody cares about their Twitter presence," and insider said. Another source close to the program told the Post, "It's the worst mismanagement of star power I've ever seen in my life."
