For Mexicans Cinco de Mayo is a celebration for their victory over France, but for Americans it's another excuse to eat, drink and be merry. Of course, those rich Mexican dishes and high-calorie cocktails are an easy way to derail your diet. Among the worst offenders are the fried tortilla chips, sour cream, cheese, refried beans, fried meats and more. Even the heart-healthy guacamole weighs in with a high fat count. Take into account that a large beef burrito alone from Taco Bell's menu is a whopping 440 calories and 18 grams of fat. And that's without all of the trimmings. At Pepe's Mexican restaurant, a seemingly healthy taco salad with beef comes in at 550 calories and 26 grams of fat, making it far from a healthy offering. A small serving of Mexican fried ice cream also has 494 calories and 23 grams of fat. Don't forget to throw in a couple of frozen margaritas at 246 calories each. The bottom line is that you can go way overboard if you're not careful with your choices. Even though it's only one day a year, you can still stay on track with these choices. Opt for the chicken fajita. Stick with the chicken enchiladas. Any grilled fish offering is also a smart alternative. If you're set on burritos, chimichangas or quesadillas, ask to have half of your entrée put in a to-go container so that you aren't tempted to overdo it. Always choose the soft tortilla over the hard, deep-fried shell. Go with black beans or pinto beans over refried beans that are usually prepared with cheese and lard. Select salsa over queso any time. Of course, any time low-fat cheese, brown rice, whole wheat tortillas or marinated veggies are an option, make them your pick. If you do go for a salad, request a plate instead of the deep-fried shell that's commonly served. So party on... just do it in slimming style. For drinks, go with a light beer, wine or cocktail with a diet drink. Or just enjoy a flavored liquor on the rocks.
