Put a New Twist on Your Hair

You don't have to be in France to do as the French do, especially when it comes to your hair. The French twist is actually a hairstyle you can tackle that doesn't require a stint in beauty school. The 'do is one of those elegant styles that can make even the most basic look seem sophisticated. French twists work the best on hair that is medium to long in length. For the most part, it's difficult to work short hair into a twist. Having layers can also make the process more complicated, as it's harder to make the hair stay in place. If you're short on time, the French twist is also a quick fix that can be implemented in under 10 minutes. Of course, practice makes perfect. So even if you achieve the results you were working toward the first few times, don't give up. The first step is to brush through hair.
Pull hair back as if you were putting it into a low ponytail but don't use a hairtie. Use gel or mousse to flatten any flyaways. From the bottom, lift hair straight up against the back of the head. Twist the hair and roll clockwise for two rotations. Bend the hair and tuck the ends underneath so that they aren't seen. Then tuck the roll inside itself applying pressure so that the outside of the twist remains smooth. Repeat this step until the edges of the roll are no longer present and a crease appears at the edge of the twist. Keep everything in place with bobby pins, barrettes or any other clips. Use hairspray to lock the look in and voila, you've got a salon-ready hairstyle in no time at all.
