Don't Leave Your Hair High and Dry

There's nothing fun about contending with dry hair. When you're struggling with dull, lifeless hair, it seems like there's no solution for getting to the root of the problem. Oftentimes, dry hair is accompanied by dandruff. Not sure what causes dry hair? Consider these factors: Hair dye, perms, chlorine from pools, too many heating components such as flat irons and blow dryers, harsh shampoos, frequent washing, sun exposure. Other causes may include nutrient deficiencies, illness and medications. There are things you can do to control dry hair. For starters, don't wash your hair too often. Find a balance. Most people don't need to wash hair every day, although you shouldn't go more than three days without a wash. Shop carefully when looking for the right shampoo. Find one that has a pH between 4.5 and 6.7. Avoid hair products that have alcohol in them. You may want to avoid shampoos and conditioners that are heavy on fragrances as they usually contain more alcohol. When washing the hair, be gentle. Don't scrub too hard. Some people with dry hair find that leave-in conditioner is beneficial. For those people who feel like their dry hair is at the point of no return, opt for a hot oil treatment that can be found at most drugstores. Apply hot oil. Leave on for up to 20 minutes. Wear a shower cap until hot oil has set in and then wash thoroughly. It goes without saying that heat can be public enemy number one when you're dealing with dry hair. Avoid hot combs, rollers and blow dryers. If you do need to use them, do so on a low setting and avoid pulling while drying the hair. Last but not least, limit exposure to the sun, chlorine, salt water or any other elements can have serious wear and tear on your hair.
