Looks like Tom Cruise's sofa-jumping days are over. After just five years, TMZ was first to report the bombshell news Friday that Katie Holmes has filed for divorce from Tom Cruise. For some, it was news you could file under "about damn time." But for the Top Gun star himself, the filing seemed to come out of the blue. People reports the Rock of Ages star's rep released the following statement: "Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children. Please allow them their privacy to work this out." But it seems like the only thing Holmes is interested in working out is keeping their daughter, 6-year-old Suri, as far away from her Scientology-loving dad as possible. TMZ reports that his kooky religion was the straw that broke the camel's back, and Holmes wants sole legal custody and "primary residential custody" of their daughter. She also asks for a "suitable amount" of child support and division of property, although the two signed a prenup before marrying. Where the divorce will take place is key in determining if Holmes will get her wish. She filed in New York, where it seems the two keep an apartment, but Cruise wants the divorce to play out in California, where courts are less likely to award sole custody. Regardless, the divorce seems to have brought about some risky business for Holmes, who TMZ reports has a Scientology tail on her at all times. TMZ has photographed two vehicles, a white Cadillac Escalade and black Mercedes, which have followed Holmes when she leaves the New York apartment for the past week or so. The church hasn't commented on their presence.
