One of the more popular fad diets around, the grapefruit diet has been on the covers of countless women's magazines for decades. While the quick weight-loss plan may have a long shelf-life, it is hard to say how long somebody could actually stick to this method of eating. Most nutritionists call for a diet that's at least 1,200 calories -- this is less that 800.
Legend has it that grapefruit makes the fat-burning process move more quickly. The beta-carotene found in pink grapefruit lowers cholesterol and improves heart health. Most people grapple with the grapefruit diet to lose their extra pounds fast. Yet, common sense says it is more a by-product of drastic calorie reduction that is attributed to the 10 to 20-pound loss over a 14-day period.
